History

The Witcher Wikia should have a lot of information. Gamepedia wiki has some information as well.

The Witcher 3 story primer is not a bad thing to read either although it centres on the PC games. Finally, the story recap inforgraphic is worth a look.

The World of the Witcher The World Of The Witcher book is a must have but at £20 ish, it's a big ask. Of course, I have it. Yes, you can borrow it. ☺

The game is set after the events of the Witcher III Wild Hunt, Heart of Stone, and Blood and Wine. Mostly, after the "good" ending… It has nothing whatsoever to do with the previous game I run: the lore is utterly different. In addition, the world does not follow Andrzej Sapkowski's canon, or at least some of it. Consider it an alternate time line heavily inspired by the books and games.

The world is being dragged into the renaissance: black powder muskets, industrial steam machines, and new technologies are appearing at a great pace. Magic, monsters, and chaos have a revival of sorts and their powers is also increasing.

Ciri is not Empress of Nilfgard, following her wishes, she is a Witcher on the Path. Geralt and Yennefer live peacefully in Tousain where Corvo Bianco serves as the new local of the Wolf Witcher school after Kear Morhen is left derelict.

The Nilfgard Empire has conquered the North after King Radovid and Djikstra were murdered. Temeria is an independent state, under the Empire's official rule but governed by King Vernon Roche I. Guerilla warfare rage on in Rodania, Kaedwen, Aedirn, and Lyria. Rumour has it that King Roche I of Temeria and his shadows (Ves and Thaler) are behind the various rebellions. Some Scoia'tael commands have even joined hand with humans against the Nilfgardians rulers and everywhere bandit gangs roam freely. There are even rumours of a half elf trying to unit elves and humans under the same banner…

Skellige, under Queen Cerys an Craite, stopped its coastal raids and prosperity shines on the isles. However, the coast lines are home to many pirate crews which wile not stopping trade between the North and South do take their toll on shipping. After all, there is surplus of ships, shipwrights, and crews from Skellige. The Imperial navy is stretched thine and unable to police that waters as well as they should.

In the Empire's heartlands, many of the previously loyal states show more and more independence streaks after the costly Northern War which gain them little. All this keeps the Emperor and his armies busy, constantly draining the treasury.

The weak Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, broken by the news of his daughter's death, is forced to make more and more concessions to everyone as slowly but surely his power ebbs away. His allies slowly abandon him one after the other. What will happen at his death is uncertain since he has no living hire.
